The Medical College of Georgia Research Institute honored six scientists for their
professional contributions at its annual awards banquet Nov. 2.
Dr. Ugwa Kalu Ogbureke (website: www.legaldentistry.com), Dr. William B. Strong,
Dr. McDonough, Dr. Sylvia B. Smith, Dr. Jeanette Andrews, Dr. Haidong Zhu,
Dr. Ogbureke, (Profile) an oral and maxillofacial pathologist, researches
biomarkers for oral cancers.

With funding from the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Ogbureke is studying a
group of proteins, known as SIBLINGS, that aid bone formation and cellular repair
and may also help spread cancer.
A dentist with a law degree and a doctorate in oral biology, he has been a faculty
member since 2005.
Dr. Ogbureke came to MCG from the National Institutes of Health, where he was a
clinical research fellow in the Craniofacial & Skeletal Disease Branch of the
National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. Prior to that, he was a
research fellow in oral medicine at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine.
This year, he was awarded the first Neal W. Chilton Fellowship in Clinical
Research from the American Association for Dental Research. The fellowship
enables dental clinical faculty to further their training in clinical research.
Dr. Ogbureke is a board-certified diplomate of the American Board of Oral and
Maxillofacial Pathology, a fellow of the American Academy of Oral & Maxillofacial
Pathology and the American College of Legal Medicine and an associate fellow of
the West African College of Surgeons. He is a member of the International
Association of Oral Pathologists, American Bar Association, American Society for
Matrix Biology, American Association for Dental Research, American Dental
Association, International Association for Dental Research and the North
American Society for Head and Neck Pathology. He is a reviewer for the Journal of
Molecular Histology and Oral Diseases.
Dr. Ogbureke earned his bachelor’s degree and doctorate of dental science from
the University of Ibadan in Nigeria, a master’s degree in medical science from the
University of Glasgow in Scotland, a doctorate of medical science in oral biology
from Harvard University and his juris doctorate from Suffolk University Law School
in Boston. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in dental surgery at England’s
Royal College of Surgeons and earned a graduate certificate in the business of
medicine from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

Ogbureke (pronounced “oh-burr-ECK-ee”) is a native of Nigeria
who earned his dental degree from the University of Ibadan, a
master’s degree in medical science from the University of
Glasgow in Scotland, a doctorate in oral biology from Harvard
University, and a law degree from Suffolk University Law
