17 new Senior Advocates of Nigeria emerge

THREE members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) were named among 17
new members of the Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN) on Nov. 30, 2007 in Abuja by
the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee (LPPC).

According to the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Alhaji Usman Musale, the
committee chaired by Chief Justice Idris Legbo Kutigi, chose the new members of
the silk after a "more open and rigorous" screening exercise.

The list includes former NBA scribe Julius Oladele Adesina, and a female legal
practitioner, Uchenna Gregory Nwokedi. The former first Vice President of the
association, Mrs. Funke Adekoya, made the list on September 9, 2001.

The others include the current Dean, Faculty of Law, University of Abuja (UNIABUJA),
Prof. Charles Udenze Ilegbune, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice
in the sacked Celestine Omehia administration in Rivers State, Okechukwu
Emmanuel Wali, and his counterpart during the Governor Orji Kalu of Abia State
administration, Solomon Ukaegbu Akuma.

The LPPC yesterday cleared 17 lawyers for the conferment of the rank of SAN.

Chief Solomon Ukaegbu Akuma (SAN)
The Otumba of Igbere, Chief Solomon Ukaegbu Akuma (SAN) was sworn-in as
Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice
Idris Legbo Kutigi, on Wednesday, December 12, 2007. The swearing-in took
place with that of 16 other lawyers selected for the conferment of the rank of
Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) by the Legal Practitioners Privilege
Committee (LPPC).

Their swearing-in brought the number of SANs to 245 since the most
prestigious honour in the legal profession was introduced in 1975.

Chief Solomon Ukaegbu Akuma, is the second Igbere son to be conferred with
SAN rank. Chief Chris Uche is he first Igbere son to have such rank.
